When my husband became totally dependent and moved into a power wheelchair, the world felt like it started to shrink. I looked for voices that sounded like ours. I looked for a life that required a floor hoist, 24/7 care, and complex logistics.
Instead, I found a sea of “accessible” content featuring people will full upper body function, self-propelling through life. Their “accessible” was not our “accessible”.
I realised then that if the resource we needed didn’t exist, I would have to build it. We live in the gap between “standard” accessibility and high dependency reality. Our life is measured in turning circles and floor hoist clearances. We don’t just need a wider door; we need a total rethink of the build environment.
The Unadapted Life is a chronicle of our refusal to stay home.
